Many Students who come to Vista Academy are suffering from dual diagnosis disorders, which can mean they have mental health issues or are suffering from both addiction and anxiety, depression etc. We treat each individual with psychiatry, neuropsychology and therapy because we understand many teens come in with underlying issues as well as their drug and alcohol abuse.
A recent study shows that teens who are treated for depression early on have less chances of developing drug and alcohol abuse. Mental disorders like depression and anxiety can often contribute highly to the use of drugs and alcohol and if fought and treated early, alcohol and drug dependence is less likely.
Researchers at Duke University found that only ten percent of 192 adolescents whose depression receded after 12 weeks of treatment later abused drugs, compared to 225 percent of those for whom treatment did not work.
It turned out that whatever they responded to cognitive-behavioral therapy, Prozac or psychiatric medication, both treatments, or a placebo- if they did respond within 12 weeks they were less likely to develop a drug-use disorder, said Dr. John Curry, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Duke.
At Vista Academy, dual diagnosis addiction treatment center, we understand that teens need more than just addiction treatment, but a holistic approach to treat each adolescent based on his needs. We provide our teens with optimal care for each situation by catering also to the group needs of teens with substance abuse issues and co-occurring disorders.
If your teen is struggling with depression, anxiety or drug and alcohol abuse, get them the help they need to become successful young adults.
